My Nana gave me this picture tonight. She was a war bride. This picture was taken just after VE Day. She’s sixteen years old in this picture.
She called me today to tell me that she had an accident. She fell down in front of her building. She smashed her mouth and fractured both of her arms.
She told me the doctors thought she just had a weak “old lady moment” and just fainted, but she said she she tripped on a hole in the sidewalk. They kept testing her at the hospital, asking her to spell words, then spell them backwards, giving her a list of words and then asking her ten minutes later what the words were. Stuff like that. She answered every question perfectly.
I visited her tonight and brought her a bouquet of flowers. She’s doing really well, considering she’ll be spending the next six weeks effectively immobile. But she’s still going on Monday to get her hair done. And she apologized for the state of her eyebrows. Apparently, someone doesn’t put them on that well. Then she stared at my grandfather.
Later, she also told me she donated more books to the library last week. She’s donated books to the library every year on my father’s birthday. The first year, it was a book on computers. Last year, it was a book on theatre. This year, it was some children’s books. She told me how she used to read to him when he was a little boy he had all his books memorized by the time he was three. I suggested next year she might donate a book on physical fitness, since he loved working out and running and cycling. She thought that was a great idea.
Before I left I signed her cast:
Get well soon!
Love, Jason
